HERA is an international multidisciplinary team of public health professionals, epidemiologists, pharmacists, anthropologists and health economists with experience in both industrialised and low-income countries. HERA Ltd is a private company, established in 1990 and registered in Belgium. While liaising with a network of experts, research organisations, and public health institutions in low income and industrialised countries, HERA operates independently of political and financial interest groups. The HERA team brings together a broad spectrum of expertise in health and development, research, programming, and policy.

This is a collection of summaries of major research themes investigated by the Bandim Health Project (BHP) through the last 25 years, as well as a bibliography of what has been published. Over the years, the BHP has developed collaborative relations with projects in other countries, in particular Medical Research Council Laboratories (MRC), The Gambia, and ORSTOM/IRD, Senegal. Where results from these collaborative projects are relevant to the research interest of the BHP, these have also been included in the list.

Poor developing countries face a formidable task in improving the health status of their populations. Rapid improvement cannot be expected, and actually a decline is more likely in many countries in view of economic difficulties and a devastating AIDS epidemic. The donors need to be patient and prepared for a long-term sustained support. Rather than taking point of departure in our own goals for health sector development we must first of all consider the severe constraints facing poor developing countries and understand and respect their enormously complex context. Seen in this light, the current trend of pushing through international prescriptions is quite worrying. ...
