Ph.D. fellow in helminth eggs as hygiene indicators
Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen
Department of Veterinary Disease Biology wishes to appoint a Ph.D. fellow in project Helminth eggs as hygiene indicators from December 1st, 2009, or as soon as possible thereafter. The fellowship is for 3 years.
Job description
With reference to the project manager, the work of the Ph.D. fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development within:
Helminth eggs as hygiene indicators
Helminth eggs are highly resistant to environmental factors. Therefore, survival of helminth eggs, especially eggs of the large roundworm Ascaris suum, is frequently used to evaluate the hygienisation of fecally contaminated organic liquid and solid wastes. Nevertheless, the knowledge and documentation regarding survival of helminth eggs of various species of ascarids is missing and there is a need for a standardised and validated method for the use of ascarid eggs as hygiene indicators.
The Ph.D. project should develop and validate in vitro methods (e.g. egg development assay, egg hatch assay) for monitoring the inactivation/survival of helminth eggs (Ascaris, Ascaridia) during manure handling (e.g. biogas plants) etc. The project will include:
• Comparison of survival rates of eggs from worm uteri and from faeces
• Validation of in vitro assays in relation to in vivo assays for assessing viability
• Effects of key physical-chemical environmental factors on egg viability
The project will be linked to and be part of international projects on spreading of helminth eggs in black water and survival of helminth eggs in different organic wastes, e.g. those treated in biogas plants. The applicants should therefore be willing to pay visits and participate in field work outside Denmark, e.g. in Vietnam.
The appointee should preferably have qualifications within the following areas:
• parasitology
• ecology
Qualification requirements
In connection with the appointment to the post special importance will be attached to the applicant having the professional and personal qualifications stated below:
• Passed Master's degree in biology or other areas related to the above subject area(s)
The Ph.D. fellow is also required to have research potential, to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills.
Terms of employment
The post will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The post is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.
The position as Ph.D. fellow requires the applicant to be approved for admission to the Ph.D. programme at LIFE when accepted for the post.
