";" Debate meeting about humanitarian aid and military with representatives from among others the Danish Defence and Danish Red Cross. Hosted by University of Copenhagen's Summer Schools in International Health & Global Health Challenges. The meeting will be a panel discussion in which each of the four panellists will present their views in short introductory remarks. After that journalist Kirsten Larsen (DR) will facilitate the discussion in which the audience can contribute with questions and comments. In the panel: Jesper Jørgensen (Doctors Without Borders) Birgitte Ebbesen (Danish Red Cross) Jens Tingleff (Doctor for Danish Defence) Knud Vilby (Journalist and writer) Sebastian Wiberg (First Lieutenant, Danish Defence) Among the questions to be debated are: Should military forces contribute to international development aid beyond security operations to make aid agents work possible? Are army-green or camouflaged vehicles, buildings and personnel to wave and wear symbols like red crosses/crescents? Would civil and military integration strategies improve or interrupt the work for stability and the trust building within societies and states in conflict? Should ‘humanitarian' aid be delivered when conditions are too insecure for aid organizations to act? Is there a need for clarifying the roles of military and humanitarian agencies more, when they are operating in the same area or conflict? A two-day workshop. ";"Communication and research: Approaches to communicating your research to practice and policy Audience analysis, research summaries and policy briefs There is an increasing demand from funders, policy makers and other potential users of the research we do for clear and practical explanations - or our work and its results (e.g. research based policy briefs, summaries, etc.) After the completion of years of academic research, field works, testing of hypothesis and dissemination with informants, researchers must also have the skills to ‘repackage' the results of their work and explain its benefits to different audiences in simple terms. Some researchers have questions on the oversimplification of their work, which can be quite complex. But the fact is that simple and clear explanations of your research will increase its value - by making it easier for users outside the research community to benefit from. It can be rewarding to see research actually being taken in and used a solid ground for interventions. Background This workshop is a follow-up on the workshop held in March 2008 organised by ENRECA Health. It builds on one of the key recommendation from the HERA report assessing Danida-supported health research is to contribute to a better and more effective dissemination of research results. The amount of research-based information generated globally is overwhelming and challenges the effective utilisation of research-based knowledge in decision-making processes. With effective application of knowledge management approaches it is possible for an organisation to generate value from its information-based assets. An important instrument in this process is to minimize the communication gap between researchers and decision-makers through development and dissemination of policy-briefs. In order to develop a policy brief that can effectively serve its intended purpose it should be made focused, accessible and feasible (see attached document). The policy brief is often said to be the most common and effective written communication tool in a policy campaign, yet, researchers often find the brief the most complex policy tool to develop. The Network, thus, is aiming at identifying efficient ways of developing research-based policy briefs, which, in turn, may serve as a tool that can be utilised by partner countries. Objectives Gotten an understanding of how to identify a specific audience and the benefits of his or her project; Produced a two-page brief based on their research; The possibility to continue working with an experienced research communication experts after the end of the workshop. To raise awarness on issues of inequalities and injustice in relation to health a Commission on Social Determinants of Health under the leadership of Sir Michael Marmot was established. The Commission concluded their work in 2008 by submitting the report 'Closing the gap in a generation: Health equity through action on the social determinants of health'. Enreca Health will carry on this debate by organising a dialogue meeting with Sir Michael Marmot on 12 June, 2009. The meeting is jointly organised by Danida, Global Doctors and Enreca Health. ";" Seminar on development and prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in Africa The pandemic of diabetes (DM) - predominantly type 2 diabetes - is affecting all continents and all peoples. Thus, Africa has not escaped the diabetes pandemic even though considerable regional and local differences in the prevalence of DM exist. Urban populations in particular have high DM prevalence going as high as 8-10% in countries such as South Africa and Kenya. An even higher proportion of individuals are suffering from pre-diabetes, and approximately 50% of these individuals are expected to progress to overt diabetes. The incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) including hypertension is high as well, and the risk factors for CVD and DM often overlap within a cluster of metabolic disorders collectively known as the metabolic syndrome. Based on the above, the University of Copenhagen in collaboration with Steno Diabetes Center will put emphasis on the understanding of the development and prevention of DM and CVD in Africa. On June 2-3, 2009, a seminar will be held at Steno Diabetes Center including experienced researchers and health professionals from Africa and Europe who will lecture within different themes. They will all critically discuss DM and CVD in an African context ranging from treatment of patients at diabetes clinics to treatment of HIV-patients and the risk of CVD and DM.
