Diabetes seminar and PhD course

Seminar on development and prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in Africa

The pandemic of diabetes (DM) - predominantly type 2 diabetes - is affecting all continents and all peoples. Thus, Africa has not escaped the diabetes pandemic even though considerable regional and local differences in the prevalence of DM exist. Urban populations in particular have high DM prevalence going as high as 8-10% in countries such as South Africa and Kenya. An even higher proportion of individuals are suffering from pre-diabetes, and approximately 50% of these individuals are expected to progress to overt diabetes. The incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) including hypertension is high as well, and the risk factors for CVD and DM often overlap within a cluster of metabolic disorders collectively known as the metabolic syndrome.

Based on the above, the University of Copenhagen in collaboration with Steno Diabetes Center will put emphasis on the understanding of the development and prevention of DM and CVD in Africa. On June 2-3, 2009, a seminar will be held at Steno Diabetes Center including experienced researchers and health professionals from Africa and Europe who will lecture within different themes. They will all critically discuss DM and CVD in an African context ranging from treatment of patients at diabetes clinics to treatment of HIV-patients and the risk of CVD and DM.
