Open debate meeting on microbicides

View the invitation here

Key note speaker: Dr. Zeda Rosenberg, CEO of International Partnership for Microbicides

The results of the CAPRISA - Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa microbicide study reverberated throughout the HIV prevention research community and enthused AIDS activists and donors when they were published at the XVIIIth International AIDS Conference in July this year. In a 3-year study of 889 women in both rural and urban KwaZulu-Natal, the researchers demonstrated a 39% reduction in HIV infection and a 51% reduction in genital herpes infection among women who used a gel containing 1% of the antiretroviral tenofovir. After this first proof of concept for an ARV-based microbicide, donors, activists and women in developing countries are asking when we will see a microbicide on the market.

You are invited to a briefing on the status of the development of microbicides and to participate in a debate about the scientific, logistical and ethical considerations in the microbicide research community after the CAPRISA results.
