Malaria in Pregnancy Consortium (MIP)
Institutions in charge of project: Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine
Mission Statement:
Our mission is to improve the control of malaria in pregnancy in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Malaria in pregnancy affects up to 50 million women around the world every year, which can result in pregnancy loss, maternal death, severe maternal anaemia and low infant birth weight which greatly increases the risk of death. MiP is responsible for as many as 100,000 children dying needlessly every year. In sub-Saharan Africa, where malaria is endemic in most countries, severe malaria accounts for approximately 10% of maternal deaths, suggesting that an estimated 25,000 maternal deaths could be prevented each year by improved control of malaria in pregnancy.
Our work is conducted in 40 expert institutions all over the world, using standardized methods and sharing research data and information as a consortium. We are hopeful that this approach will generate a new momentum of life-saving research which will provide evidence-based policy changes in the shortest possible time.
The MiP Consortium is a five year programme of research to evaluate new and improved existing interventions for the prevention and treatment of malaria in pregnancy.
Ten major projects will direct research in four key areas of malaria in pregnancy: prevention, treatment, burden assessment and how best to scale up existing strategies and interventions. Expert institutions from all over the world will conduct this research and share information to provide the evidence needed to improve the control of malaria in pregnancy. The MiP Consortium is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the European Union.

Projects with DBL as partner:
- Seasonal IPTp with SP: A multi-centre trial of seasonal IPTp with SP in women pregnant for the first time to determine whether IPTp could be restricted to the main transmission seasons in areas in west Africa where transmission is highly seasonal, resistance to SP is low and ITNs are used. We estimate that this trial will be completed by summer 2011
- Frequency of IPTp with ITNs: A multi-centre trial to determine whether using ITNs reduces the need or frequency of IPTp in HIV-positive and negative pregnant women, to be completed by summer 2011.
Partners: DBL, LSHTM, Ghana, Mali, Gambia & Burkina Faso
Project start and end: February 2008 - January 2012
