Malaria

Malaria constitutes a major challenge to the health systems in low income countries, in particular in Africa south of Sahara. According to the Global Fund, malaria causes almost one million deaths each year. Most of the victims are children under five years and the hardest burden is to be found in sub-Saharan Africa. The impact of malaria increases in countries with poor health systems leading to growing growing drug and insecticide resistance.

Studies by leading economists have shown that malaria not only causes human suffering and misery among those affected and their relatives, but that the disease also has profound empediments on society and development.

Malaria research in Denmark is primarily is undertaken by the Centre for Medical Research (CMP) in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen and Rigshospitalet.

CMP is engaged in comprehensive aspects of epidemiological and immunogical malaria research, as vaccine development, drug resistance, urban malaria and malaria in pregnancy. Many studies are multidisciplinary and apply a health systems approach, emphasising Public Health.

The CMP ENRECA programme in Tanzania  is supported by Danida and collaborates with the Joint Malaria Programme, a formalised research and training collaboration between KCMC, National National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), in Tanzania, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Biomedical Research Institute, Seattle, and University of Copenhagen.
